11th Amendment
The 11th Amendment limits the power of the federal courts. The federal courts are not all mighty and can only be granted the power to do certain things. The law cannot be changed to help and/or benefit someone of the judicial branch.
12th Amendment
The 12th Amendment states that the electors will meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for president and vice president It also states that different ballots must be used for president and vice president.
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment was the abolition of slavery. It states that slaves are no longer legal in any of the 50 states in the United States of America and all slaves are now free.
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment defines what it means to be a U.S. citizen and protects certain rights of the people. There are three clauses to the 14th amendment. The Citizenship Clause gives someone who was born in the United States the right to become a citizen. The Due Process Clause protects the 1st Amendment rights of the people and that these can't be taken away without due process. The Equal Protection Clause states that all men are created equal and can't be discrimination against them by the law.
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment states that anyone that is a citizen of the United States has the right to vote. This right cannot be denied no matter what race, gender, or heritage a person comes from. If they are a citizen than they have the right to vote.
16th Amendment
The 16th Amendment states that congress can lay and collect taxes from anyone in the United States of America. Congress can collect taxes from peoples incomes and this amendment is sometimes refered to as the federal income tax amendment.
17th Amendment
The 17th Amendment changes the way that we elect the US Senators. Instead of being elected by the State Legislators, they are now elected by the popular vote. These senators will remain in office for 6 years.
18th Amendment
The 18th Amendment is about prohibition. This bans the selling and drinking alcohol in the United States. Prohibition was created to try and stop people from drinking or selling to much alcohol.
19th Amendment
The 19th Amendment gives woman the right to vote. They are now considered as equals and can vote for government officials. United States citizens cannot be denied the right to vote based on gender.
20th Amendment
The 20th Amendment states that after an election, the president will take office on January 20 and the U.S. senators and representatives will take office on January 3. This amendment also says that congress will meet at least once a year.
21st Amendment
The 21st Amendment is the repeal of prohibition. Selling and drinking alcohol in the United States is no longer illegal.
22nd Amendment
The 22nd Amendment says that the president can only stay in office for a maximum of 2 terms. The president can only be elected twice, he/she would then be in office for 8 years.
23rd Amendment
The 23rd Amendment gives DC the right to send electors to the electoral college to vote for the president of the United States. This amendment gives DC the same rules that apply to the 50 states.
24th Amendment
The 24th Amendment gets rid of the poll tax. Poll tax is a tax paid for the right to vote and the 24th Amendment gets rid of all of these taxes. Less people were voting because they had to pay to vote.
25th Amendment
The 25th Amendment states that if the president passes away, can't finish his duties as president, or resignation than the vice president will take over. This is not uncommon as it has happend several times before.
26th Amendment
The 26th Amendment lowers the voting age from 21 to 18 years old. The old rules said that we had to be 21 years of age to vote but the 26th Amendment changes it to 18 years old. Some people were not very happy about this amendment because they thought that 18 year olds are too young to vote.
27th Amendment
The 27th Amendment says that congressional pay will raise after the presidential election is held and the raise is approved. This amendment took nearly 200 years before it was ratified by the states.
